Process Evaluation of the Every Child Health Information for Parents Resources in Wales

Aim: To identify barriers and facilitators to maternal mental health service access for women experiencing disadvantage in the North East and North Cumbria, and inform the design of more accessible and inclusive services.

Approach: Qualitative research with women from disadvantaged backgrounds and non-statutory service providers, exploring what prevents women from accessing statutory mental health services and what strategies can improve reach and engagement.

Impact: Findings were presented to a regional network of over 60 health professionals, commissioners and VCSE organisations across the North East and North Cumbria, directly informing discussions on how maternal mental health services can better reach women who do not frequently access statutory care.

Designing Accessible Maternal Mental Health Services in NE England

Aim: National evaluation to assess implementation, dissemination & use of “Every Child Your Pregnancy and Birth” and “Newborn to Age 2” Booklets in Wales

Approach: Evaluation design, surveys, interviews and focus groups with midwives, health visitors and health board leads across Wales, mixed methods data analysis, report delivered with recommendations, report presented to Public Health Wales and Welsh Government

Impact: Findings directly increased awareness and demand for the resources, with a measurable rise in orders through distribution channels following the evaluation. The work also strengthened the programme team’s capacity to evidence outcomes and inform strategic decisions at Public Health Wales and Welsh Government level.

Impact Evaluation of Treasured Hearts Education Campaigns for Children

Aim: To assess effectiveness of education campaigns on building children’s health knowledge, confidence, and community engagement.

Approach: Interviews and focus groups with children, parents and community leaders, review of campaign materials, data analysis, report delivered with recommendations and presented to management team.

Impact: Evaluation findings identified what was working well across the campaigns and surfaced internal gaps in delivery and reach, providing Treasured Hearts with clear, actionable recommendations to strengthen programme effectiveness and demonstrate impact to funders and community stakeholders

Service Evaluation of the Public Health Prevention in Maternity Programme

Funded by NIHR and the Integrated Care Board

Aim: To assess the impact of the PHPiM programme on health and care outcomes, health inequalities and service delivery across the North East and North Cumbria maternity system.

Approach: Mixed methods evaluation combining document analysis, secondary data analysis and interviews with parents and healthcare providers across the region, focusing on perinatal mental health, reproductive health and maternal healthy weight.

Impact: Evaluation findings identified programme strengths and gaps across all three priority areas, generating practical recommendations for future commissioning, service design and professional practice. Findings informed care pathway development and interprofessional collaboration across the region’s maternity and neonatal system, and supported the case for continued investment in public health prevention within maternity care.

Geospatial Analysis of Community Pharmacy Access in England

Aim: To assess the impact of NHS funding cuts on weekend pharmacy opening hours and patient access to medicines across England.

Approach: Quantitative and geospatial analysis of NHS pharmacy opening hours data, mapping regional patterns of access loss across England to identify the areas most severely affected by funding-driven reductions in weekend provision.

Impact: The analysis directly informed the NPA’s national advocacy campaign and received wide coverage in national and specialist media, contributing to parliamentary and government engagement on pharmacy funding reform.

Accountability and Transparency Review in Digital Health Systems

Aim: To examine how governance and design decisions affect accountability, transparency and trust in digital health systems, and identify practical pathways to strengthen ethical oversight and compliance.

Approach: Cross-project case study analysis of three EU-funded digital health initiatives, examining how explainability and transparency principles were applied in system design and governance. Findings were synthesised and published as a peer-reviewed output.

Impact: Findings provided practical guidance for research and innovation teams on embedding accountability and ethical oversight into digital health design.

Ethical, Legal and Social Issues in Pandemic Preparedness Planning

Horizon Europe

Aim: To identify the ethical, legal and social issues associated with pandemic preparedness and response, and develop practical recommendations to guide decision-making and protect vulnerable populations
